Periodontal/Gum Disease

Periodontics refers to the treatment and maintenance of the structure that supports your teeth – namely, the gums and bone matter.

Gingivitis is an early form of periodontitis, or gum disease. If you experience an occasional swelling of the gums, gums that bleed after brushing or flossing, itchy gums, or bright red or purple gums, chances are you have gingivitis. Gingivitis can be treated by having your teeth professionally cleaned, followed by a strict oral hygiene regimen, including anti-bacterial rinses.

Left untreated, gingivitis can escalate into periodontitis. There are many factors that can contribute to the disease, including smoking, genetic tendencies, and unchecked diabetes. Periodontitis symptoms include those of gingivitis, as well as a metallic taste in the mouth, receding gums, enlarged spaces between the gums and teeth, severe halitosis (bad breath), and even loose teeth (from loss of bone).

At Crow Family Dentistry, we offer personalized treatments for Periodontitis. The severity of disease for each patient will dictate our recommendations. We will discuss all alternatives including Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy.

To help prevent tooth loss form periodontitis, the initial treatment and standard of care is to remove the buildup of bacterial plaque and tartar (hard deposits) through scraping or ultrasonic vibration. In addition, antibiotic options may be considered. With our investment and training in dental lasers we can now offer the advantages of Laser Assisted Periodontal Therapy.

Laser Gum Treatment

Gum disease is one of the most common problems plaguing dental patients today. Laser gum treatment with the EZlase and ultrasonic scaling provide amazingly comfortable procedures by which we can treat most periodontal problems. The advantage of laser periodontal therapy is the precise removal of diseased, infected, and inflamed soft tissue within the periodontal pocket. This precision has allowed greater success in achieving gum reattachment and elimination of bleeding than with standard conventional therapy.

Our laser certified hygiene team can provide gentle gum procedures to be completed without expensive gum surgery or the need to be referred to a Periodontal specialist. These conservative laser procedures result in little to no bleeding, infection, swelling or post-treatment discomfort.
